Audio Output Transformer

The most common use of a Audio output  Transformer is to match impedances in audio equipment  with vacuum tube amplifiers. Amplifiers of this type have one or several types of  amplifying components based vacuum tubes which have components such as resistors, capacitors and transformers forming the amplifying circuit. Most audio output transformers works by a balanced push-pull primary winding and an unbalanced secondary winding which matches the high impedance output of a push-pull amplifier circuit to the low impedance of the ground referenced speaker load.

• Increase or decrease the impedance of a circuit

• Step up or increase signal voltage or step down and decrease a  signal voltage

• Convert a circuit to balance from unbalanced or vice versa.

• Isolate one audio device from another

What are the limitation of Audio Output Transformers

• Audio output transformer only pass audio signals not frequency response. This means an audio transformer will reduce or block signals that are above or below the audio range of 20 -20,000 Hz. This can be a benefit or drawback depending on the application.

• Audio output  transformers has a maximum input level that can't be exceeded or it will cause a distorted signal. When this maximum level is surpass the transformer is said to be "saturated", it cannot hold any more signal.

• A audio output transformers cannot increase or step up a signal more than 25 dB when used in a normal audio circuits. Because of this a audio output transformer cannot be used for a microphone preamp.
